Dog-Friendly Beaches Near Malibu: What Pet Owners Need to Know

Malibu may have beautiful beaches and sunshine year-round, but it’s not the most dog-friendly beach spot when it comes to sandy paws. Most Malibu beaches strictly enforce no-dog rules, even for leashed pets. It’s a bummer, we know.

But the good news is that just a scenic 30-minute drive up the coast, Ventura County offers a different story. You’ll find gorgeous beaches that actually welcome dogs (during posted hours), plenty of parking, and a whole lot less hassle.

In this guide, we’re spilling the real local secrets. From the one Malibu-area beach that does allow dogs, to all the dog-friendly Ventura beaches that’ll have your pup wagging their tail with approval.

Confirmed Dog-Friendly Beaches in Malibu

While most beaches in Malibu city limits are not dog-friendly, there's a notable exception. Leo Carrillo State Beach is technically located within Malibu city limits, but since it’s a state park, it follows different rules. Translation: You can bring your dog here as long as they are leashed.

Leo Carrillo State Beach

Address: 35000 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, CA 90265

Hours: Open 8 AM – 10 PM

Fees: Parking: $3–$12/day depending on season

Located just in West Malibu, Leo Carrillo State Beach is your go-to if you're hoping to spend a beach day with your pup within the Malibu town limits.

  • Dogs are allowed on leash north of Lifeguard Tower 3
  • South of Tower 3 is off-limits to pets, even on-leash.
  • Beautiful tide pools and rocky coves to explore
  • North beach is a great spot for early-morning walks and quieter weekday visits

Tucked below bluffs within Leo Carrillo State Park's northern stretch of sand, Staircase Beach is a lesser-known spot. It’s not officially labeled as a dog beach, but dogs are allowed on leash, and many locals bring their pups here for a peaceful surfside stroll.

Nearby Top Dog-Friendly Beaches & Coastal Walks

Unlike Malibu, where dog-friendly beaches are few and far between, Ventura County is a different story.

Here are the best beaches to visit with your dog if you’re staying in Oxnard, Ventura, or nearby:

Surfer's Point at Seaside Park (Ventura)

Address: Harbor Blvd & Figueroa St, Ventura, CA 93001

Hours: Open 5 AM – 6 PM

Parking and Fees: Paid lots behind the beach (Ventura County Fairgrounds) or metered street parking nearby

A true Ventura favorite, Surfer’s Point blends wave-watching, beach walks, and laid-back vibes into one pup-approved spot. It's especially popular with surfers, kiteboarders, and early-morning dog walkers who love the fresh breeze and scenic views.

  • Dogs allowed on leash
  • Scenic coastal path and lagoon views
  • Access to birdwatching, picnic areas, and bike trails
  • Approx. 1.5-hour drive from Malibu (traffic depending)

The beach connects to the Ventura Promenade and Omer Rains Bike Trail, making it easy to extend your outing beyond the sand.

Mussel Shoals Beach (Ventura)

Address: Ocean Ave & Breakers Way, Ventura, CA 93001

Hours: Dawn to dusk

Parking and Fees: Limited free street parking within the Mussel Shoals community (watch for private road signs)

Located along the northern Ventura County coast, Mussel Shoals Beach is a peaceful, lesser-known spot that’s perfect for dog owners seeking a quieter beach day.

  • Leashed dogs welcome
  • Great for scenic beach walks and birdwatching
  • No restrooms or facilities; pack essentials and water
  • The Shoals Restaurant (at the Cliff House Inn) nearby for oceanside dining
  • Approx. 1.5-hour drive from Malibu (traffic depending)

Mussel Shoals Beach's long shoreline north of the pier has soft sand and gentle waves, ideal for walking in the surf with your pup.

Hollywood Beach (Oxnard)

Address: Ocean Dr & Los Altos St, Oxnard, CA 93035

Hours: Dawn to Dusk

Parking and Fees: Free street parking; small lots nearby

Hollywood Beach brings old-school California charm with wide, sandy stretches and a mellow, residential feel. Once a filming location for early Hollywood movies, this beach still holds onto that touch of glamour..

  • Leashed dogs welcome
  • Dog hours: before 9 AM and after 5 PM
  • Approx. 1-hour drive from Malibu (traffic depending)

It’s less crowded than nearby harbor beaches and has a laid-back, locals-first vibe that makes it perfect for peaceful strolls, especially with your pup in tow.

Tips for a Safe and Fun Dog Beach Day

Beach days are better with dogs, but a little prep goes a long way. Before you pack the cooler and clip on the leash, here are a few easy tips to help things go smoothly:

Know the Rules

Always check for posted signage about leash laws, dog zones, and local ordinances. Rules vary by beach, with some allowing dogs only at certain times or in designated sections.

Watch for Tides and Currents

Some beaches, like Silver Strand, have calmer shorelines great for play. Others have strong undertow or steep drop-offs. If you're not sure, ask our friendly ChicBeach team or look for signs warning of currents.

Protect the Paws

Hot sand can burn sensitive paws, especially midday. If it's too hot for your feet, it's too hot for theirs. Consider dog booties! Disposable options or reusable ones from your local pet store work great and slip on easily. They’re also handy for rocky beach terrain.

Use Pet-Safe Sunscreen

Did you know they make sunscreen for pups? Dogs with short fur or pink skin can get sunburned just like us, especially around the nose and belly. Try Epi-Pet, one of the only FDA-approved sunscreens for dogs. Never use human sunscreen unless your vet okays it.

Bring a Rinse Jug + Extra Towel

Not all beaches have rinse stations. Fill a gallon water jug before you leave and do a quick rinse of paws and bellies at the car. A microfiber towel also helps dry them fast (and keeps sand off your car floor).
